About My Practice

I have been in private practice for over 20 years and have seen over 2000 people, as individuals, couples and/or families for a very broad range of issues.

I view my job as guiding people to make change by finding their own unique path to lasting health and wholeness.  I am offering a free 30 minute phone consultation to all perspective clients. It is important that we decide if I can meet your needs. If I am not able to help you, I will refer you on to someone who does good work in dealing with your specific needs.

What is unique about my practice is that I have advanced training in a process called E.M.D.R*. This effective tool often shortens the duration of therapy by quickly resolving hurtful memories and then installing positive corrections to our self defeating beliefs and behaviors. It is effective in treating, anxiety, depression, addictions and PTSD.* Using EMDR, I am willing to treat people with on going addiction problems as long as we continue to achieve positive results.

I think I am particularly effective in helping couples make lasting positive changes. I also think I have insight for people experiencing the confusions of midlife.  This major life transition is not well understood.

In addition to being a counselor and psychotherapist, I am now serving my clientele, via telephone, as a coach.  I want to help clients sustain the progress made in therapy by offering coaching across their lifespan.

What is the difference between counseling, psychotherapy and coaching?

COUNSELING  is more information oriented and is geared to help the client understand what they want and need.  (What do I want?)

PSYCHOTHERAPY is involved with looking deeper in order to help clients free themselves from negative self-defeating inner beliefs.  (Why do I repeat the same mistakes?)

COACHING is goal achievement oriented work to help the client make lasting change.  I offer post therapy support via telephone, for those clients who need a “tune up” to refocus on their path to health and wholeness.   (How can I stay on my path to lasting health and wholeness?)

About Hal Pullin

Hal PullinHal Pullin is a Washington State licensed mental health counselor who wants to help seekers to sustain a life of personal and spiritual growth. He has been practicing psychotherapy since 1987, when he received his MA from Antioch University. He also has a BA in elementary education from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA, received in 1964. Hal has a background in both drug and alcohol counseling and in child and family therapy. Of over one hundred schools of thought in psychotherapy, Hal primarily draws from the schools of Psychosynthesis, Gestalt therapy, and Transactional Analysis in his practice.

He has undergone advanced training in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and incorporates this method whenever appropriate. While he sees individuals, families, and couples for a variety of issues, he is also involved in bringing psychotherapy into the addictive/recovery field. If he had a specialty, it would be in treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Hal has over 40 years of teaching, coaching, consulting, and workshop facilitating.

His point of view is that we need to do significant psychological work if we are to make a deep and meaningful spiritual journey. He has taught at all educational levels from elementary school through college. He is married, has a son from his first marriage, three stepchildren from his second marriage, three grandchildren and one on the way.

What is the difference between Psychotherapy, Counseling, Coaching, and Consulting?

COUNSELING Counseling is more information oriented than psychotherapy. Psychotherapy is about looking inside and resolving disturbances. Counseling involves learning how to manage feelings and behaviors.

PSYCHOTHERAPY is the process of looking inward to resolve inner disturbances and conflicts. It differs from counseling in that counseling is more information oriented to help the client understand and manage behaviors.

LIFE COACHING is the process of helping clients achieve their goals once they have completed therapy. This, for the most part, can be achieved by telephone consultations.

CONSULTING Hal is available to consult with individuals, families, institutions, and businesses (including non-profits) to achieve better teamwork.
